Pennetta, Petrova Move Into Bali Quarterfinals

The seeds went two for four on Thursday, as the second round of the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic wrapped up and the quarters were set. The Top 4 seeds in action emerged unscathed.

Flavia Pennetta and Nadia Petrova, seeded No.3 and No.4, respectively, both moved into the quarterfinals in straight sets, although one had it far easier. Petrova broke serve five times and was never broken herself during a one-hour, 13-minute, 61 61 rout of Tathiana Garbin; Pennetta had a much sterner test from Russian Anastasia Rodionova, struggling through the heat and rallying from 5-2 down in the second set to prevail, 63 75.
"It was very tough out there for both of us; I was really struggling with the heat and humidity and it seemed in the second set I couldn't breathe anymore," Pennetta said. "Then I noticed she wasn’t feeling good either. She called the physio at the next changeover and again at 5-2. Maybe that made me more focused, and I'm very happy to be in the quarterfinals."
Also moving through to the final eight were Tamira Paszek, who fought back from 3-0 down in the second set to beat No.7 seed Sara Errani, 60 76(2), and Chan Yung-Jan, who was down 4-2 in the second set but came back to get the better of No.9 seed Peng Shuai, 61 75.
"I tried to forget about who I was playing because if I thought about it, it would be really hard," Chan said of Peng. "We are very good friends off the court.
"I found it hard at the start of the week when I came here with the heat and the humidity, but I feel a lot more comfortable now and I have nothing to lose in tomorrow's quarterfinal match against Hantuchova. I'm focusing a lot more on my singles now. We had a great year in doubles last year and it gave me a lot of experience but I've been training in France at the Mouratoglou tennis academy the past few months and that's really helped."
Top seed Daniela Hantuchova, No.2 seed Patty Schnyder, No.5 seed Francesca Schiavone and unseeded Marta Domachowska all claimed quarterfinal berths on Wednesday. Hantuchova will face Chan, Schnyder will face Domachowska, Pennetta takes on Paszek and Petrova plays Schiavone.
